Raw Paw Returns

The third time’s a charm for our Raw Paw reading series (although the first and second times were pretty great, too). On Tuesday night we were thrilled to welcome the Raw Paw team back for the launch of Ed Buffaloe’s Stuck in the Future, the latest title in their Mind Maze poetry series. (For those of you not familiar with Mind Maze, it’s Raw Paw’s fantastic new poetry imprint. They release a title every month, and each edition showcases twenty poems by one of Austin’s finest poets—all wrapped in a lovely screen-printed cover by Nicole Carleton.)

Raw Paw mingling

Raw Paw Crew

After some affable mingling, we got down to the business of book-launching. Ed Buffaloe (above, far right) was joined by (left to right) Wade Martin, Josh Boyd, MC David Jewell, and Jim Redmond. They treated the crowd to some splendid poetry—and you can see for yourself by checking out the videos below (there’s also footage from past Mind Maze launches on our YouTube channel). We’ll be back next month for more from the Paw… see you then!

Poetry Galore at Malvern Books

If you missed Sunday afternoon’s reading at Malvern Books, you missed something rather special (and you might like to keep a closer eye on our calendar, so as not to miss out on other awesome events like, for example, tonight’s edition of the Raw Paw reading series).

Catharine Savage Brosman Tomás Morin Erin Belieu

We were delighted to host a reading featuring an acclaimed and talented trio of poets: Catharine Savage Brosman, Tomás Morin, and Erin Belieu (above, left to right). As always, we had our video camera at the ready, and we hope you’ll enjoy checking out the footage.

Erin Belieu is the author of four poetry collections (all from Copper Canyon Press), and co-founder (with poet Cate Marvin) of the wonderful VIDA organization, which analyzes the critical reception of women’s creative writing.

Tomás Q. Morín’s debut poetry collection, A Larger Country, was selected by Tom Sleigh from over one-thousand manuscripts for the APR/Honickman First Book Prize.

Catharine Savage Brosman is Professor Emerita of French at Tulane University. Her new book, On the Old Plaza, is her tenth collection of poetry!

Rainy-Day Revelry at Malvern Books

A rainy election night might sound a little gloomy, but Tuesday was as cheery as a box of budgies at Malvern Books, as we spent a wonderful, cozy evening listening to work from two award-winning poets, Carmen Giménez Smith and Laurie Ann Guerrero (pictured below, left and right respectively, sheltering from the deluge while our smugly dry pirate looks on).

Carmen and Laurie

Laurie Ann, currently the Poet-in-Residence at Palo Alto College and the Poet Laureate of San Antonio, read from her collection A Tongue in the Mouth of the Dying, while Carmen, a CantoMundo Fellow and editor-in-chief of the literary journal Puerto del Sol, read from Milk and Filth. (And yes, both of these brilliant books are available at Malvern, along with Borderlands 40, which features Laurie Ann as the keynote poet.)

Our thanks to Carmen, Laurie Ann, and everyone who braved the torrential downpour to stop by the store. We’re confident this was a reading worth opening your umbrellas for, and we’re sure, watching the footage below, that y’all will agree!

Introducing MORE WRECK MORE WRECK

More CakeOur Saturday night was more than all right—it was magnificent! Tyler Gobble, host of the Everything is Bigger reading series, launched his first poetry collection, MORE WRECK MORE WRECK, at Malvern Books, and we couldn’t be MORE PROUD! We’re big fans of Tyler (at right) and his smashing new book (and we’re not alone—MORE WRECK won the 2013 Cargill First Book Poetry Prize), so the launch was definitely a cake-worthy occasion. And when you add cake to a fantastic night of poetry and music and tank-tops and rooster stories and OutKast lyrics, well, it’s hard to imagine a better start to the month.

Thanks to everyone who came by—y’all were a delightfully enthusiastic bunch—and extra special giant thanks to poets Jason Tobin (below, middle left) and Layne Ransom (middle right), and musician Lost John (far right) for joining Tyler on the stage.

More Wreck launch

If you’d like to hear awesome music and peachy poems from Lost John, Layne, Jason, and everyone’s favorite golf disc enthusiast, check out the footage below. And then stop by Malvern Books and ask for your very own copy of MORE WRECK MORE WRECK (and while you’re at it, you might like to ask us about Collected Feelings, Layne and Tyler’s recent chapbook collaboration). You won’t be sorry!

The Lion & Pirate Meet Joyce Ann Tepley

On Saturday night we teamed up with VSA Texas (The State Organization on Arts and Disability) and the Pen2Paper Creative Writing Contest to host a very special edition of the Lion and Pirate… please welcome our guest, the wonderful Joyce Ann Tepley!

Joyce Ann TepleyAfter a forty-year career as a clinical social worker, Joyce Ann decided to devote her time to helping people in a different way: by telling their stories. She founded the Thriver Living Community, an online space dedicated to sharing the struggles and triumphs of people who have journeyed from survival to “thrival.” And she also spent fourteen years working on her book, Thriving Through It—How They Do It, in which she profiles a number of people with long-term physical disabilities who are living vibrant, successful lives in spite of the challenges they face.

Joyce shared stories from Thriving with our enthusiastic audience, and provided some fascinating insights into the beliefs and personality traits that help people prosper in difficult circumstances. Joyce was joined on our stage by a tremendous trio: Willie Mae Clay, who features in the book, and Michael Tidmore and Meredith Gaines, who provided the night’s musical entertainment. If you want to be enlightened and inspired by this month’s Lion crew, check out our footage below (trust me, you’ll want to hear all about Gary Guller and his amazing Everest team). And be sure to mark off November 14th on your calendar so you can catch the next L & P in person!

An Autumnal Everything

Last night we hosted an all-new edition of our Everything is Bigger reading series—and it was especially all-new, because the three wonderful readers were all newcomers to Austin. Let’s have a warm welcome for (from left to right) accomplished poets Ana CarreteBen Kopel and Mike Bushnell (with host Tyler Gobble, second from left, who is not new, but who has a new book coming out very soon).

Everything is Bigger Also new? The Everything is Bigger trivia contest, designed to encourage more yelling in the bookstore. There were a host of wonderful prizes up for grabs, including a waterproof disposable camera (with eighteen photos still left!), a slightly chipped coffee mug, and a copy of Ray Stevens’ classic album, Surely You JoustSo if you’d like some first-rate literary entertainment (and an answer to the trivia question “What is the only American state whose name can be typed using just one row of the keyboard?”), then watch on! And remember to keep the evening of November 12th free for the next refreshing round of Everything is Bigger.
